Wood types & finishes available in NJ

The wood you choose shapes the look, the lifespan and the budget. We work with both pressure-treated pine (chemically protected against rot and insects) and Eastern White Cedar (longer-lasting, more natural color).

Pressure-treated pine wood fence sample
Pressure-Treated Pine
Pressure-treated · Rot & insect resistant
Standard yellow pine treated under pressure to resist rot, insects and decay. Fresh install has a green/yellow tint that weathers to a silver-gray over 6–12 months. Can be stained.
Eastern white cedar wood fence sample with natural orange tone
Eastern White Cedar
Premium · Natural rot resistance
Naturally rot- and insect-resistant without chemicals. Warm honey-orange color when fresh, weathers to a silvery-gray. The premium choice for board-on-board, horizontal and decorative fences. Hand-crafted in the USA.

All wood fences are unsealed at install — the natural patina takes 6–12 months. You can stain or seal after installation for color preservation, but it's optional. Treated pine vs. cedar pricing varies by lumber market.

Wood fence questions & answers

No — and that's true industry-wide for wood, not just Fence Pro. Wood is a natural material that cracks, warps, discolors and decays from weather exposure. We use high-quality lumber and expert installation, but the wood itself is subject to these natural processes regardless of who installs it. Treated wood resists decay longer, but it's still wood. If you want a fence with a manufacturer's lifetime warranty on the material itself, ask about vinyl or aluminum.
Pine: cheaper upfront, works fine for stockade, split rail and most picket fences. Treated to resist rot/insects. Has a yellow-green tint when fresh. Cedar: more expensive upfront, naturally rot-resistant without chemicals, warmer honey color, the better choice for decorative styles like horizontal, board-on-board with toppers, or anything you want to leave unstained. Both weather to gray over time.
With proper installation and basic maintenance, expect 10–15 years for pressure-treated pine and 15–25 years for Eastern White Cedar. Lifespan depends on staining frequency, ground contact, sun exposure and how well water drains away from posts. Posts always go first — pickets and rails outlast them.
It's optional, not required. If you want the wood color preserved: apply a transparent or semi-transparent stain after the wood has dried out (4–6 weeks post-install for pine, 6–12 months for cedar). Re-stain every 2–4 years. If you want it to weather naturally to silver-gray: leave it alone — the natural patina is beautiful and many homeowners prefer it.
Stockade: pickets butt up flat against each other on one side only — cheapest, fully private, "ugly side" faces one neighbor. Board-on-board: alternating boards overlap on both sides — looks identical from either side ("good neighbor" fence), allows some airflow. Shadowbox: similar to board-on-board but with the boards spaced slightly apart for more airflow and depth — modern look on both sides.
Yes — that's the beauty of custom wood fencing. We can add lattice, diamond, victorian picket, criss-cross, shamrock or ring toppers to any board-on-board, tongue-and-groove or stockade fence. Toppers add 12"–18" to the fence height for an open decorative element above your solid privacy section.
Gate posts are oversized (4x4 or 6x6 minimum) and set deeper in concrete than regular posts because they carry the swinging weight of the gate plus daily wear. We use heavy-duty hardware — strap hinges, gravity latches and optional spring closers — sized for the gate width. For double-drive (driveway) gates, we recommend 6x6 posts set 3'+ deep in concrete.
