Chain link is consistently the most economical fence material — lower upfront cost than wood, vinyl or aluminum. Cost depends on linear feet, height, mesh gauge and whether you choose galvanized (cheapest) or PVC-coated. Gates, post upgrades and privacy slats add cost. Galvanized: classic silver look, cheapest, hot-dipped to resist rust, lasts 15–20 years. PVC-coated: galvanized core with a vinyl outer coating in black (most popular), green or brown. Costs ~20–30% more but extends life to 25+ years and disappears into landscaping for a cleaner residential look. For pool enclosures and backyards visible from the house, most clients pick black PVC.

Powder coating is a dry powder applied electrostatically and then heat-cured to form a hard, even shell on the steel — much more durable than traditional liquid paint. The coating is thicker, more impact-resistant and far less likely to chip, peel or fade. Available as a premium upgrade on most heights and gauges. Outperforms standard PVC coating in extreme climates.

Add a tension wire along the bottom (extra rigid bottom edge), a bottom rail (small steel bar between posts at ground level), or bury the bottom of the mesh 6" into the soil.
